Why I Started This Blog
People have asked me why I started a scuba diving in blog, and to be honest, the answer has changed over the years depending on where I was in my career.
I love scuba diving. Like any job, it has its highs and lows. I’ve had days diving in crystal-clear water with great customers where I’ve thought, “I can’t believe they pay me to do this.” I’ve also had days with rough seas, poor visibility, or difficult customers where I’ve thought, “They definitely don’t pay me enough for this.” That’s just part of working in the dive industry.
As my career progressed, I gradually moved more towards the equipment maintenance side of diving. Before long I found myself answering the same questions over and over again – how to look after gear, whether something could be repaired, what regulator to buy, or how often equipment should be serviced. That’s when it occurred to me that a blog might actually be useful. If I could answer those questions in one place, maybe it would help other divers too.
A little about me. Before diving became my profession, I worked as a mechanical engineer while scuba diving remained my hobby. I’ve been diving since 1992 and became a professional diver in 2015, spending many years working as a PADI Staff Instructor. As time went on, more and more of my work centred around servicing regulators, cylinders, compressors, and just about anything else connected with dive equipment. Over the years I became known, at least within my own circle, as the person people came to with dive gear problems.
So why Cambodia?
For me, the answer is simpleāI love the place.
I’ve dived in many parts of the world and enjoyed all of them, but Cambodia struck a balance that was hard to find elsewhere. The diving is enjoyable, the pace of life suits me, and the people are incredibly welcoming. Whether it’s lending a hand or simply stopping for a chat, there’s something about Cambodia that makes it feel like home.
I also think Cambodia is one of diving’s hidden gems. Many people are surprised to discover that you can scuba dive here at all, yet there are excellent dive centres with experienced staff and well-maintained equipment ready to get people into the water. It may not have the same reputation as some of the bigger diving destinations, but I think it deserves far more attention than it gets.
So, in short, that’s why this blog exists.
I want to share what I’ve learned over the years – whether that’s advice on dive equipment, maintenance, dive sites, or simply helping people get more enjoyment out of scuba diving. I’m not affiliated with any dive shop, and I intend to keep this blog independent so that anything I recommend is based on my own experience rather than who happens to be paying me.
If something I write helps someone solve a problem, choose the right piece of equipment, or inspires them to come diving in Cambodia, then I’ll consider this blog a success.
And if you ever have a question about diving or dive gear, feel free to get in touch or contact me via the Facebook page. I’ll do my best to help.
